Map of Territories of Nebraska and Kansas, 1854

As Congress debated the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the Commissioner of Indian Affairs negotiated treaties with native tribes since the new territories would include land that the U.S. had previously promised to various American Indian nations. This map shows the new territories of Kansas and Nebraska as well as the proposed location of lands designated for Indian tribes.
