How to Apply

Applying for a job at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is as easy as following these step-by-step instructions:

  1. Visit Find a Job
     
  2. Select a job that is*:

    * The links above will take you to OPM's USAJOBS web site.

  3. Select the position title and open the job announcement.
     
  4. Review the job announcement carefully. It will be organized into 5 sections:
    • Job Overview — contains general information about the job such as the job announcement number, title, salary range, series and grade, promotion potential, how long the job is open, and where the job is located. The overview section also provides a brief summary of the job.
    • Duties — contains information on the major duties and responsibilities of the job.
    • Qualifications and Evaluation — lists the qualification requirements and explains the process we will use to evaluate your application.
    • Benefits and Other Information — highlights some of the benefits available to you as a National Archives employee and lists other important facts.
    • How to Apply — lists what application materials are required and provides instructions on where and how to submit your application.
  5. Follow the instructions in the How to Apply section of the job announcement.
    • Application forms, tip sheets, and answers to applicants' frequently asked questions are available in the Applicant Tools and Resources section of this web site.
       
  6. Submit your application package to the contact listed on the job announcement.
    Before you submit your application package, you should review the entire job announcement and make sure you have included all of the required documentation:
    • An application or resume will always be required.
       
    • Other documents that may be required (or recommended) are KSAO statements, college transcripts, NARA Form 3035 - Applicant Background Survey, and documentation supporting your claim to veterans preference (if applicable).
       
    • If you are a current or former Federal employee, you must also submit your latest SF 50 Notification of Personnel Action documenting that you have career or career conditional status, and your latest performance appraisal.

Keep a copy of your application. The application you submit will not be returned to you. If you want a record copy, you must make one before you submit it.
