Open Data Policy

Open Data Policy

At the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), we are working to implement open data policies, including the May 9, 2013, Executive Order (EO 13642) and accompanying Open Data Policy - Managing Information as an Asset (M-13-13). The policy requires agencies to open data and information in machine-readable formats in order to fuel innovation in government and the private sector. Our Open Data efforts are an expansion of our work in Open Government and Digital Government Strategy and support our efforts to engage with citizen developers.

In July of 2020, the NARA Data Governance Board selected the Federal Government Data Maturity Model for use in performing a  Data Maturity Assessment of NARA.

Enterprise Data Inventory

NARA's Enterprise Data Inventory includes all public and non-public data assets. Those data assets that are publicly available are collectively considered the agency's Public Data Listing, but no longer available as a separate file. Public data assets are available in a variety of formats, including xml, csv, pdf, and html. You can access the entire Enterprise Data Inventory in json format and access previous inventories. All data assets contained within NARA's Enterprise Data Inventory are available on Data.gov.

Customer Feedback

Please send your suggestions on how we could expand the Public Data listing by posting a comment on our NARAtions Blog post, "Have Your Say: Open More Data," email opengov@nara.gov or create a new issue on our Github repository.  In your feedback, please let us know if there are other formats for data assets you would like to see made available.
