514.1 Administrative History

Established: In the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW), November 1972.

Predecessor Agencies: Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health and Scientific Affairs, HEW (1967-72)

Transfers: To the Department of Health and Human Services by the Department of Education Organization Act (93 Stat. 695), October 17, 1979.

Functions: Administers and exercises oversight responsibility for the Public Health Service (PHS) and its component health agencies.

History: Established in HEW, effective January 1, 1967, to administer the Public Health Service, pursuant to Reorganization Plan No. 3 of 1966, effective June 25, 1966, which authorized Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare to reorganize PHS and its component health agencies. Redesignated OASH, 1972. See 514.1.
