The Right To Vote

After the Civil War, some white citizens used a variety of tactics to prevent African Americans from voting. Most, if not all, of the voting rights court cases resulted in judgments against the defendants; however, the federal legal system became a place where violations of civil rights could be recorded and adjudicated.
