Civil Rights Workers Murdered

During the summer of 1964, civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner assisted the African American community in Neshoba County, Mississippi with voter registration. Outraged by their progress, Deputy Sheriff Cecil Price and members of the local Ku Klux Klan conspired and murdered them on the night of June 21-22. After a thorough FBI investigation, several men, including Deputy Price, were indicted by a federal grand jury. Many of the defendants were found not guilty, and some served shamefully abbreviated sentences.
