WAVES Women Segregated

During World War II, thousands of women entered the U.S. Naval Reserve through the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) program, and less than three percent of these women were African American. At the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Memphis, "local customs and traditions" were making it difficult to plan accommodations for black WAVES women.
