Map Of Omaha Beach (Declassified)
On June 6, 1944 (D-Day), Allied forces landed at Normandy and began the liberation of Europe from Nazi Germany. A few days after the initial invasion, the Allies established artificial harbors on the invasion beaches, called "Mulberry" harbors, through which cargo could be efficiently offloaded. To create sheltered water for harbor operations, blockships were scuttled off the coast in clusters called "gooseberries," with Gooseberry 2 located off of Omaha Beach. Gooseberry 1 (Utah Beach), Gooseberry 3 (Gold Beach), Goosebery 4 (Juno Beach), and Gooseberry 5 (Sword Beach) were also created along Normandy's coast.
