Racial tensions ran high on the construction site of Fontana Dam. On July 1, 1942, after blacks were hired to work on the site, a mob of 75 white employees advanced upon the Negro dormitory with the intention of running them off the project. The mob was disbursed, but returned the following day and threw rocks at the black employees. After several days of agitation, the tension eased.
