At the start of World War II, America's ship fleet was aging and on the verge of becoming obsolete. Liberty ships were designed and built as cargo ships to help supply the Allied war effort in both theaters. Able to be constructed both quickly and cheaply, the approximately 2700 Liberty ships built during the war came to symbolize America's industrial strength.
