Powering the War
When the Tennessee Valley Authority Act was signed in 1933, TVA was given the charge, among other things, "to provide for the national defense by the creation of a corporation for the operation of government properties at and near Muscle Shoals in the State of Alabama, and for other purposes." As it became apparent that the United States would be joining World War II, TVA stepped up production to meet the war needs.
