Photographing the
Tennessee Valley
TVA photographers have taken over one million photographs chronicling all aspects of life in the Tennessee Valley. From the clearing of the land to the building of the dams, from the workers in the field to the multi-generational residents, these images document a region on the cusp of change. They also show somber scenes of soil erosion, perpetuated by devastating drought and deforestation. Conversely, they depict the benefits of improved farming techniques on the land. Together, this collection provides a unique glimpse of the southeastern United States during its 20th century transformation.
