Apollo 14 Moon Photo

Apollo 14 launched January 31, 1971, and returned February 9, 1971. Apollo 14 was the last lunar landing with an “H mission” designation: two-day stays at a specific site with two moonwalks. It was also the last lunar landing before implementation of the iconic lunar rover. This image was taken while astronauts Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell were on the surface in the Fra Mauro formation, named after the Fra Mauro crater within the formation. The image is an unedited print from the original film carried by the astronauts.

This image is representative of many other photos in our holdings which document over fifty years of NASA’s accomplishments in space and on the ground.
