Historian Edward L.Ayers retells the story of the Civil War on a human scale by focusing on two communities in the Great Valley: Augusta County, Virginia, and Franklin County, Pennsylvania. During the war, the valley saw pitched battles and reprisals. In the weeks and months after emancipation, black and white residents tested the limits of freedom. A book signing will follow the program.
