National Archives OGIS Director Represents U.S. at International Conference

Washington, DC…Miriam Nisbet, Director of the Office of Government Information Services (OGIS) at the National Archives is representing the U.S. Government at an international conference in Santiago, Chile on April 20, 2010. The conference is entitled:  "Implementation of the Transparency Law and the Right to Access Public Information in Chile".

Ms. Nisbet will participate in the keynote panel discussion on “International Experiences on the Right to Access Information”. Her remarks will focus on the creation of OGIS by the U.S. Government and the strides that the Office has made in introducing mediation services as part of the process of providing access to government information.

Ms. Nisbet serves as the FOIA ombudsman for the Federal Government. OGIS began operations in September, 2009, and provides services to mediate disputes between FOIA requesters and Federal agencies; reviews policies and procedures of administrative agencies under FOIA; and reviews agency compliance with FOIA recommend policy changes to the Congress and President to improve the administration of FOIA.
