Statement by the Archivist of the United States David S. Ferriero
Press Release · Thursday, October 28, 2010

Washington, DC…Today a story was reported in the press that a former employee is being investigated for theft. While I cannot comment on the story since the matter is part of an ongoing investigation, I pledge that the National Archives will fully cooperate with the authorities on this matter.

As I have stated on several occasions, the security of the holdings of the National Archives is my highest priority. I will not tolerate any violation of the law that protects both records and property that belongs to the U.S. government and the American people. We have recently put in place a holdings protection team that is working closely with archival units to design improved training techniques, institute new policies and procedures, and purchase new equipment to ensure that our holdings are safe.

I want to commend the staff of the Office of the Inspector General in their handling of this case and in their commitment to ensuring the restoration of stolen property back to the National Archives.
