Records for Genealogical Research:
The National Archives at Atlanta has custody of millions of records, on paper and on microfilm, created by various agencies of the United States Government. The records most useful for genealogical research are listed here. These records may contain full information about a person or little more than a name. The census records for 1790-1940 consist of nationwide listings in each census year. Indices are available for many censuses. General military indices cover volunteer soldiers from throughout the United States taking part in several wars. Other microfilm collections specify the port, state and/or region. Most of our textual holdings are from federal agencies and U. S. District Courts in eight Southeastern states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee). The World War I Draft Registration Cards cover the entire United States--a nationwide collection. Staff members and volunteers are available to advise visitors in conducting their research. Guidelines and regulations for using the facility are also available.
