Civil Case Files
National Archives Identifier 719114
A typical civil action case file might include the complaint; subpoenas; summons; answer; various motions and petitions; affidavits and stipulations; orders and correspondence related to the case; depositions; transcripts of testimony; exhibits; judges' opinions; the judgment in law cases; orders of the judge in equity cases; transcripts of state court records in cases removed from state courts; records of appeal; writs; and related papers. Some examples of civil action cases include land condemnation cases, civil rights suits, suits for damages (torts), and equity cases where a judge may issue an injunction to prevent an action from occurring rather than having to wait until it occurs and then sue for damages.
