Exhibit Opening: A Journey Through Europe on the Eve of War
Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum
West Branch, IA
This temporary exhibit explores Herbert Hoover’s six-week goodwill tour of Europe in early 1938, a journey that took the former president across a continent facing profound political change. He traveled through 12 European countries to accept humanitarian honors, commemorate post-World War I relief efforts and meet with political leaders. His travels included a meeting with Adolf Hitler in Germany, offering a fascinating window into Hoover’s experiences in Europe at a pivotal moment before World War II.
Through historical photographs, correspondence, souvenirs and gifts collected during the journey, visitors can follow Hoover’s travels and gain new insight into his international relationships, humanitarian legacy and continuing influence years after leaving the White House.
