Ike Skelton Salute to Veterans

At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, World War I ended. On the 100th anniversary of this landmark event in our history, the National Park Service, City of Independence, Truman Library Institute, and the Harry S. Truman Library & Museum will host a moving tribute to America’s veterans at the 7th Annual Ike Skelton Salute to Veterans.

In honor of our veterans, the Museum is open free of charge to everyone from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for a day filled with patriotic activities, including:

12:00pm: Ceremony featuring Brig. Gen. (R) Tim White followed immediately by a presidential salute and wreath-laying at the Truman gravesite in the courtyard.

1:00pm: The Grateful Americans Entertainment Troupe will perform.

2:00pm: The Library will host a panel discussion titled, "Boots on the Ground: The Evolving Role of the American Soldier" moderated by KMBC anchor Rob Hughes.

3:20pm: The Independence Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will take the stage for a Quilt of Valor presentation.

3:30pm: The Spirit of Independence Band will play a slate of patriotic songs.

5:00pm: Part Three of "The Great War" will be shown in the Theater.

Throughout the day there will be craft activity tables set up to write letters to members of the military currently serving abroad. And there will be resource tables providing helpful information for the veteran community in the afternoon.
