National Archives Releases Additional FBI Materials from the JFK Assassination Records Collection

Washington, DC . . . At 9 A.M. on Tuesday, May 14, l996, the National Archives will make available to the public additional materials relating to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. This opening is pursuant to the John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992 that established the Collection which consists of assassinated-related records of the Federal government.

The materials which were transferred from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) include 16,679 pages of investigative files reviewed by the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) in 1978 and 1979 as it examined various assassination conspiracy theories. Among the materials are files pertaining to FBI investigations of Angelo Bruno and Gabriel and Sam Mannarino, organized crime figures. To obtain a list of individuals whose records are included in this opening, please contact the National Archives Public Affairs staff at 202-501-5525. You may visit the John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection online at http://www.archives.gov/research_room/jfk/index.html.

Of the 16,679 pages transferred from the FBI, 4,404 contained postponed information ranging from one word or item on a page to more extensive postponements. Three hundred fifty-two pages were withheld in their entirety. Many of these postponements were taken to protect sensitive sources, particularly those who provided information regarding organized crime activities.

To date, the FBI has transferred more than 641,000 pages of records, including its files on the investigation of President Kennedy's assassination, Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby.

The collection will be available for researchers in the textual research room at the National Archives facility in College Park, MD, located at 8601 Adelphi Road.
