David E. Alsobrook Appointed As Director of the Bush Library
Washington, DC. . . Archivist of the United States John W. Carlin announced today the selection of David E. Alsobrook as the Director of the George Bush Library in College Station, Texas. The Presidential library, which will house all of the records and the Head of State and domestic gifts of the Bush Presidency, is located on the campus of Texas A&M University. The dedication ceremony for the Bush Library will be held on November 6, 1997. Located on a 90 acre site, the Bush Presidential Library Center will include the Library and Museum maintained by the National Archives and Records Administration, and a Presidential Conference Center and academic facility administered by Texas A&M University. The Bush Library, which was built with private funds, will become the 10th library in the Presidential Library system. The Bush historical materials include 38 million pages of official and personal papers, 1 million photographs, and 40,000 museum objects. These primary sources document President Bush's long public career as Congressman, Ambassador to the United Nations, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, Chief Liaison to the People's Republic of China, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Vice-President and President of the United States.
Dr. Alsobrook has been acting director of the Bush Presidential Materials Project since 1993. Prior to that he was the liaison to the White House preparing for the establishment of the Bush Library. In making the selection, the Archivist said "Dr. Alsobrook is uniquely qualified to be the director of the Bush Library. He not only has the experience in working with the Bush papers, but he also has the wider perspective of having spent ten years as the supervisory archivist at the Carter Library in Atlanta, Georgia. I am confident that under his direction, the Bush Library will be an active and vital research center."
Dr. Alsobrook received a Ph.D. in U.S. history from Auburn University in 1983. Prior to coming to the Carter Library in 1981, he served as an archivist with the Auburn University Archives and the Alabama Department of Archives and History.
The Bush Library which was built with private funds will be administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. It will become the tenth library in the Presidential library system.
