Information Security Oversight Office Releases Report to President

Washington, DC . . .The Information Security Oversight Office’s 1996 Report to the President is available for pick-up beginning today, (Thursday, August 14, 1997), in Room 100 of the National Archives Building, located on Pennsylvania Avenue, between 7th and 9th Streets, NW, Washington, DC.

The Information Security Oversight Office, which is a component of the National Archives and Records Administration, oversees the security classification programs in both the Federal government and industry and reports to the President annually on their status. The 1996 Report focuses on security classification and declassification data throughout the executive branch of the Federal government during Fiscal Year 1996. Findings highlighted in the Report include:

  • The number of original classification authorities decreased by 959 to 4,420;
  • Reported original classification decisions decreased by more than 62,000 to 105,163;
  • In FY 1996, agencies declassified eight times the number of pages declassified in FY 1995.
