National Archives Opens Additional CIA Records
Washington, DC. . . The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has opened to researchers a series of 58 National Intelligence Estimates (NIEs) transferred to NARA by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The documents were reviewed, declassified and released under the CIAs Historical Review Program. The majority of the releases are in redacted form; a few were released in full. The records are available at the National Archives College Park, MD facility, located at 8601 Adelphi Road.
The NIEs date from the period 1951 to 1985 and analyze issues of continuing interest and importance, such as chemical and biological warfare capabilities of the former Soviet Union, the use of toxins and other lethal chemicals in Southeast Asia, the Soviet space program, arms control and the potential for clandestine introduction of weapons of mass destruction.
These records are part of a continuing transfer of National Intelligence Estimates which occurs as documents are declassified and released. Approximately 350 NIEs have been transferred to date.
