The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) is pleased to announce that Marilyn Paul-Lewis has been selected as its Fellow in Archival Administration for 1997-98. The host institution for 1997-98 is the Thomas J. Dodd Center, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. John S. Weeren, originally selected, withdrew for personal reasons. Ms. Paul-Lewis was the alternate.

Ms. Paul-Lewis most recently worked in Newfoundland as a contract archivist. While at the Dodd Center, she will participate in general administrative activities, such as the university libraries leadership council, center staff meetings, and project team activities. For her technical project, Ms. Paul-Lewis will investigate cooperative efforts between institutions. Four major tasks make up the plan of work: (1) to discover what types of cooperative efforts, groupings, and projects have been most successful for libraries and archives in the recent past; (2) to identify several projects that have potential for success and which would improve delivery of archival information to a wide variety of researchers; (3) to determine possible partners for each of the projects and to outline required and available resources; and (4) to open avenues of communication between a broad group of libraries, archives, and information groups in the Northeast who may be potential partners in projects with the Center.

The NHPRC currently awards one fellowship in archival administration each year. The fellowship is intended to expand administrative training opportunities for professional archivists with two to five years of professional archival experience. NHPRC fellows participate in a variety of daily administrative and managerial activities, from budget planning and implementation to long-range planning and the development of administrative procedures and policies. For more information on NHPRC’s fellowship program, contact Laurie A. Baty of the Commission staff at (202) 501-5610 (voice), (202) 501-5601 (FAX), or e-mail nhprc@nara.gov.
