National Archives Releases Additional Nixon Files

Washington, D.C. . . . The National Archives is announcing the opening of additional textual materials related to the Nixon Presidency on Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at 9 A.M. in the Central Research Room of its College Park facility, located at 8601 Adelphi Road. Clean Search Room Regulations will apply. (See information below for hours and directions to the facility.)

The approximately 168,000 pages of textual material that will be opened on March 18, includes records of White House Central Files, Subject Files; the Oliver F. Atkins file from the Staff Member and Office Files; National Security Council Files; and materials that were previously restricted.

The National Security Council Files include cables, memoranda, and other materials pertaining to Vietnam Peace talks; reports and cables relating to the U.S. "incursion" of Cambodia in 1970; SALT negotiations; and the staff files of William Anthony K. Lake, among others.

The Central Files, Subject Files include materials from 29 commissions, corporations, and committees, such as the Construction Industry Stabilization Committee, the Council on International Economic Policy, and the Cabinet Committee on International Narcotics Control.

The previously restricted materials consist of documents from the White House Special Files that had been withheld from public access. These documents were part of a systematic declassification review under the provisions of E.O. 12958 and are released in accordance with the requirements of the Presidential Recordings and Materials Preservation Act. Among the previously restricted White House Special Files materials being released on March 18 are documents pertaining to Patrick Buchanan, John Ehrlichman, and HR Haldeman, among others.

Since 1986, the National Archives has had 14 openings of Nixon textual materials. To date, approximately six million pages of textual materials, 4,000 videos, and 450,000 photographs related to the Nixon Presidency have been released.

The Research Room closes on Monday and Wednesday at 5 P.M.; on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 9 P.M.; and on Saturday at 4:45 P.M. Research cards are required. Personal property, i.e. notebooks, briefcases, purses or fountain pens, are not allowed in the research room. Lockers are available. Debit cards may be purchased for the photocopying machines.

DIRECTIONS:

BY CAR the new facility is approximately 40 minutes from downtown Washington, DC. Take North Capitol Street north, turn right onto Michigan Avenue (Michigan Avenue becomes Queens Chapel Road in Maryland), continue to East West Highway, turn left on Adelphi Road and follow it to the National Archives entrance on the right. Parking is available.

BY SHUTTLE from the National Archives in Washington, DC board the bus on 7th Street between Pennsylvania and Constitution Avenues. The shuttle leaves on the hour from 8 AM to 5 PM, returning to the downtown building on the hour. Researchers may use the shuttle on a space available basis with National Archives staff receiving priority.
