March Films at the National Archives Celebrate Women's History Month
Washington, DC . . . The National Archives and Records Administration presents a free film series to celebrate Women’s History Month. The screenings will be held in the theater of the National Archives Building, Pennsylvania Avenue between 7th and 9th Streets, NW and in the auditorium the National Archives at College Park, which is located at 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, MD. Friday, March 6 - Women’s History Month
"Around the World in 72 Days," 1997, explores the amazing life of journalist and world famous celebrity Nellie Bly. Considered "the best reporter in America," Bly had herself committed to an institution in order to expose the abuse of the mentally ill and traveled around the world in 72 days. From The American Experience series. (60 minutes.) Noon. Theater.
Friday, March 13 - Women’s History Month
"Jessye Norman, Singer," 1996, is a portrait of one of America’s most popular classical singers. Jessye Norman was born in Augusta, GA, and grew up at a time when America was torn with racial strife. Last December, she was recognized at the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors. Ms. Norman’s insights into her cultural roots and evolution as a singer make this a moving commentary on a remarkable career. A Malachite Production. (74 minutes.) Noon. Theater.
Friday, March 20 - Women’s History Month
"The Artist Was a Woman," 1981. The history of western art has often neglected the contributions of female artists. This documentary uncovers the works of some gifted women, while exploring why talent such as theirs was overlooked. A film by Suzanne Bauman and Mary Bell. (58 minutes.) Noon. Theater.
