National Archives and Records Administration Announces March Schedule for Lectures and Booksignings

Washington, DC . . . In March, the National Archives and Records Administration presents three free lectures and booksignings that relate to the Presidency, women’s history and a new exhibition that opened at the National Archives this month.

The programs are free and open to the public and will take place at the downtown National Archives Building, Pennsylvania Avenue between 7th and 9th Streets, NW. The public may verify times and dates by calling the National Archives public events line at 202-501-5000 (TDD users may call 202-501-5404).

Tuesday, March 10 - Presidency Series
Nathan Miller will discuss his selection of Star-Spangled Men: America’s Ten Worst Presidents. Published by Scribner. Noon. Room 105.

Wednesday, March 18 - Women’s History Month
"Rocking the Boat: Researching Female Nurses on Board the USS Red Rover During the Civil War." Steve Roca, an independent contract researcher, has conducted extensive research since 1994 on the Civil War hospital ship USS Red Rover. Mr. Roca will discuss his research and previously unknown information concerning this unique vessel and its crew, especially African American women. Although Catholic nuns were long credited as being the first U.S. Naval nurses, records in the National Archives show that the African American women aboard this ship deserve this special distinction. Noon. Room 105.

Wednesday, March 25 - Designs for Democracy
Bruce Bustard and Marilyn Paul, co-curators of Designs for Democracy: 200 Years of Drawings from the National Archives," will discuss this new exhibit on display in the Circular Gallery of the National Archives Building in Washington, DC. The speakers will discuss the exhibit’s themes, how they made their selections, and point out highlights of the show. The audience may view the exhibit following the lecture. Noon. Room 105.
