The National Archives to Make Available Russian Records Relating to the JFK Assassination
WHAT: Russian records presented to President Clinton by Russian President Boris Yeltsin in Cologne, Germany on June 20, 1999. The documents include approximately 80 pages in Russian and their translations. Among the topics covered are: reports of conversations between Soviet diplomats and Mrs. Kennedy at a reception following President Kennedy's funeral and other expressions of sympathy to Mrs. Kennedy and President Johnson by the Soviet delegation; concern by the Soviets that the U.S. media had identified Oswald as a "leftist"; and information relating to Oswald--his application for citizenship and his stay in the Soviet Union.
On the day of the opening ONLY, the National Archives will distribute, free of charge, copies of the original documents and translations to the press. Only one copy per news organization.
WHERE: Copies of the documents will be distributed from Room G-5, National Archives, Pennsylvania Avenue, between 7th and 9th Streets, NW. The original documents will be opened for research in the Central Research Room at the National Archives at College Park, 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, MD.
WHEN: The documents will be available for pick-up at 9 A.M. on Thursday, August 5, 1999, from the downtown building. The originals will be available for research beginning at 9 A.M. on Thursday, August 5, 1999.
