WHAT: The first chance to view some of the rare and original photographs that will be part of "Picturing the Century, 100 years of Photography from the National Archives." This major photo exhibition will open to the public on Friday, March 12, in the Circular Gallery of the National Archives Building. Included in this sneak preview are a signed, original Ansel Adams photograph of the Snake River; an original Lewis Hines image, entitled "Powerhouse Mechanic Working on Steam Pump;" and Dorothea Lange's signed, original photograph, entitled "White Angel Bread Line."

This is the first time in 20 years that the National Archives and Records Administration has showcased its priceless collection of more than 8 million photographs. The exhibition includes breathtaking views of the American West; nostalgic images of rural America; anguished portraits of urban blight; and snapshots of Americans at work and at play, captured by famous and anonymous photographers.

The first and only opportunity to tour and photograph the Still Pictures stack area where our collection of 8 million photographs and negatives are stored. (All National Archives stack areas are closed to the public and photographers.) This tour will include a look at original glass plate negatives, panoramic photos, lantern slides, and some of our most famous photographs.

WHO: Curator of "Picturing the Century", Bruce Bustard, will describe 12 of the key photographs in the exhibition. He will also be available for interviews. Nicholas Natanson, archivist in the National Archives Still Pictures Branch, will conduct the tour of the Still Picture stack area and will be available for an informal Q & A.

WHERE: The tour will begin in the main lobby of the National Archives at College Park, 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, MD.

WHEN: 10 AM, Wednesday, February 24, 1999. All interested press should be on time, since this is a tour. Late-comers may not be accommodated.
