College Park, MD. . . Archivist of the United States John W. Carlin today announced his appointment of Paul Brachfeld as Inspector General of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). He will join NARA on December 20, 1999.

In making the announcement Mr. Carlin said, "I am pleased to appoint Mr. Brachfeld, who will clearly provide strong leadership for our Inspector General's staff."

Mr. Brachfeld comes to NARA from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), where he served as Assistant Inspector General for Audits. During his eight-year tenure at the FCC, he also served as Acting Assistant Inspector General for Investigations. In this role, he spearheaded a major investigation that led to the successful felony conviction of two persons who defrauded the U.S. Government.

Other Federal positions held by Mr. Brachfeld include Director of Audits for the Federal Election Commission Office of Inspector General. From 1979 until 1990, Mr. Brachfeld worked for the U. S. Department of Treasury, serving initially as a systems accountant with the U.S. Secret Service, subsequently performing field office inspections and audits, and supporting complex counterfeit investigations in the Office of Internal Affairs. In 1986, he transferred to the U.S. Customs Service where he coordinated major national program audits, including audits of the Marine and Air Drug Interdiction Programs.

Mr. Brachfeld graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1979 with a B.S. Degree in Accounting.
