National Educator Awarded Nation's Top History Educator Award
Former National History Day Participant Makes Her Mark as an Educator

WASHINGTON - June 15, 2000 - Today at the National History Day® awards ceremony, countless students and teachers roared with approval when Lee Ann Potter, a lifelong participant in the National History Day® (NHD) program, received the 2000 National History Day®/The History Channel® History Educator Award. This award is presented annually to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to history education.

The announcement was made at this morning's annual National History Day® Awards Ceremony, wrapping up the activities of 2,096 students and more than 500 teachers from across the country. The National History Day® contest was held June 11-15 at the University of Maryland at College Park and was web cast live by The History Channel®. The History Channel® will also present GENERATION H: NATIONAL HISTORY DAY, hosted by Willard Scott, airing Saturday, June 24 at 6 pm ET/PT, as they follow along with students from idea to presentation.

Lee Ann Potter is an education specialist at the National Archives and Records Administration who understands teacher needs and connects with students by using the latest technology. "Her most significant contribution, no doubt, is the creation of a section on our agency's [National Archive's] web site designed specifically for National History Day," said Archivist of the United States John Carlin. "Entitled 'General and National History Day Research,' the site provides information and activities for learning to do research at the National Archives web site and for accessing selected archival sources related to the NHD annual theme."

One of the highlights of Ms. Potter 's work has been to bring National History Day® student exhibits and performances to the Rotunda of the National Archives Building. As a former National History Day® participant, Ms. Potter knows first-hand what the National History Day® experience is all about and how important the contributions of educators are in helping our future leaders appreciate the past.
