Nixon Tapes Available for Sale
Please note: The date the tapes will be made available has been changed to Wednesday, February 2, 2000.
College Park, MD. . . Beginning on Friday, January 28, 2000, 251 ½ hours of tape recordings of conversations from the Nixon Presidency, that come under the rubric "abuses of governmental power," will be available for sale. (Orders for the first 12 ½ hours of Watergate trial tape recordings are already being processed.)
Orders for these remaining 251 ½ hours of tapes are being processed on a first-come, first-served basis. These recordings include 47 ½ hours of Watergate Special Prosecution Force tapes and 205 hours of tapes identified as containing conversations related to abuses of governmental power as defined by National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) regulations implementing the Presidential Recordings and Materials Preservation Act of 1974.
The entire 264 hours of conversations are compiled onto approximately 803 30-minute cassettes. Transcripts only exist for the Watergate trial tapes. These transcripts are available on the NARA website. For further information on the content of the tapes, finding aids, how to find individual conversations, and for ordering instructions check the website, or call the Nixon Presidential Materials Staff at (301) 837-3290. All orders will be placed through NARA's vendor, the Cutting Corporation. For pricing information the vendor may be reached on (301) 654-2887 ext. 37.
The sale of copies of these recordings to the public is governed by the 1996 tapes settlement agreement in Kutler v. Carlin. (Until now, these tape conversations have been available at NARA for listening only.) NARA is making these tapes available for copying and sale exclusively through its vendor program.
For additional PRESS information, please contact the National Archives Public Affairs staff at (301) 837-1700 or by e-mail.
