Additional Nixon Papers to Be Opened at the National Archives

Washington, DC . . . On Thursday, April 27, 2000, the National Archives and Records Administration will release additional files from the Nixon Presidential historical materials at its College Park, MD facility located at 8601 Adelphi Road. The material will be available beginning at 9 A.M. in lecture rooms B and C (See information below for hours and directions to the facility.)

The opening consists primarily of National Security Council Files (NSC). The approximately 130,000 pages of previously classified NSC materials include Country File segments for the Middle East, containing extensive evidence of U.S. efforts to broker a comprehensive peace settlement in the region. Other Country Files in this opening relate to Libya, Nigeria, Ethiopia Rhodesia, Yugoslavia and Vietnam, among others. NSC Subject Files include a wide variety of topics ranging from ratification of the Chemical and Biological Weapons Treaty and other Congressional relations, to Pentagon studies which led to the abolition of the draft, to U.S. participation in international efforts to combat the rising traffic in opium and heroin. There are also a number of State Department telegrams relating to the Paris Peace Talks. Other documents relate to Daniel Ellsberg and the pentagon papers, and President Nixon's trip to China.

This release also includes correspondence from President Richard M. Nixon, Henry A. Kissinger, George P. Shultz, Alexander Haig, William P. Rogers, John B. Connally, and other government officials regarding a wide variety of foreign affairs and national security issues. Topics include U.S. trade and economic strategies, international monetary matters, foreign economic conditions, the administration's new Economic Policy, the Council on International Economic Policy (CIEP), trade negotiations with the European Community (EC), and US and EC relations. Additional documents being released concern President Nixon's meetings with Japanese Prime Ministers Eisaku Sato and Kakeui Tanaka, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeo Fakuda, Okinawa, and French President Charles DeGaulle.

This is the 16th opening of Nixon textual materials since 1986. To date, approximately seven million pages of textual materials, 4,000 videos and 450,000 photographs related to the Nixon Presidency have been released by the National Archives.

The Research Room is open Monday and Wednesday, 8:45 A.M. to 5 P.M.; on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 8:45 A.M. to 9 P.M.; and on Saturday 8:45 A.M. to 4:45 P.M. Research cards are required. Personal property, i.e. notebooks, briefcases, purses or fountain pens are not allowed in the research room. Lockers are available. Debit cards may be purchased for the photocopying machines.

DIRECTIONS: BY CAR the National Archives at College Park is approximately 40 minutes from downtown Washington, DC. Take North Capitol Street north, turn right onto Michigan Avenue (Michigan Avenue becomes Queens Chapel Road in Maryland), continue to East West Highway, turn left on Adelphi Road and follow it to the Archives II entrance on the right. Parking is available.

BY SHUTTLE from the National Archives in Washington, DC, board the bus on 7th Street between Pennsylvania and Constitution Avenues, NW. The shuttle leaves on the hour, from 8 A.M. to 5 P.M., returning to the downtown building from Archives II on the hour. Researchers may use the shuttle on a space available basis with National Archives staff members receiving priority boarding.

BY METRO take the Green Line to the Prince George's Plaza station. Transfer to the R-3 bus which stops at Archives II.
