MEDIA ALERT: Sneak Preview of "American Originals" and the Emancipation Proclamation at the National Archives

What:

    The only opportunity to preview the new National Archives Rotunda exhibition "American Originals: Part V," and to see some of the documents that will be included in the upcoming traveling version of the exhibition.

    In addition, the media will be able to view the original, signed Emancipation Proclamation which will be on special display from March 16 through March 19.

    During the preview, the featured documents will be removed from their display cases for closer viewing and filming. These original documents drawn from the vast holdings of the National Archives, many of which have never before been on display, chart the course of the nation's history from the Revolutionary War through the walk on the Moon.

When:

    Thursday, March 15, 2001, 8:30 a.m.-10 a.m.

Where:

    Rotunda, National Archives Building. Media should use Pennsylvania Avenue entrance.

Who:

    Stacey Bredhoff, curator of "American Originals," will give a brief overview of the exhibition and explain some of the documents in detail. William Safire, author of one of the featured documents, will discuss the document.

    In addition, representatives from the various sites that the travelling exhibition will visit will be available for comment. The exhibition is currently scheduled to travel to the following cities: New York City, N.Y.; Columbus, OH; Atlanta, GA; Kansas City, MO; San Antonio, TX; Los Angeles, CA; Hartford, CT.
