National Archives & IRS Join Forces in New Venture to Consolidate IRS Employee Records

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) have joined forces in the opening of a new facility dedicated to the storage and servicing of current IRS employee personnel files. This joint venture marks the first time NARA has undertaken such a project with another federal agency. Commenting on this tandem venture, John Carlin, Archivist of the United States, stated that: "We are very excited about this new partnership with the IRS and their confidence in NARA to tackle such a challenging project. We are also very pleased with the opportunity that this project offers to expand our records center services."

The new NARA/IRS project at Lee's Summit, which is the latest NARA facility to open in the Kansas City area, houses approximately 6400 cubic feet of IRS active personnel records and employs 35 local workers. The facility will provide office space for IRS employees, who will compliment NARA activities on a day-to-day basis. Previously, the IRS managed these records from ten separate sites located nationwide. As a result of the modernization efforts being undertaken, the IRS decided to centralize their operations into one national service center. According to Rich Cronin, the Internal Revenue Service's Director of Personnel Services, "It just makes good business sense to consolidate these records into one central repository. Doing so will streamline our operations and increase our ability to support our customers."
