Volunteer Opportunities at the National Archives

Washington, DC. . .Are you fascinated by history? Do you enjoy working with a public that shares your curiosity? Want a challenging and meaningful volunteer position? You can be a National Archives volunteer. With the reopening of the National Archives Building scheduled for September 18, now is an exciting time to join!

Each year, National Archives volunteers explain the purpose of archives, the work of archivists, and the value of primary sources to thousands of visitors. Recruitment for new volunteers is now underway. Ideal candidates should have a deep interest in history and a desire to share their knowledge with the public.

Training for new volunteers will be offered during the last week of August. A commitment of 100 hours service per year for two years is requested. Volunteers are especially needed 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays and all day on weekends. Applications are being accepted from now until August 10.

When the National Archives in Washington, DC rededicates its Rotunda on September 18, 2003, it will unveil not only the restored and re-encased Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights, but the start of a whole new National Archives Experience for the education and inspiration of the American public. The National Archives, with the help of the Foundation for the National Archives, is creating a dramatic and powerful project to motivate people to care more deeply about democracy, learn about their individual stories, and make use of the patriotic spirit that lives on because of records.
