Eisenhower Gallery Wins American Association of Museums Award

Abilene, Kansas. . .The Dwight D. Eisenhower Library won an award from the American Association of Museums (AAM) for its new Presidential gallery. The Muse awards were presented at a reception in Portland, OR, on May 19, during the annual meeting of the AAM.

The Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Gallery and Reader’s Digest Foundation Educational Learning Center opened in October 2002. The new gallery explores Dwight D. Eisenhower’s life and times from the end of World War II until his death in 1969. In addition to documents and artifacts, the gallery features several audiovisual components, including film and video segments and interactive touch-screen presentations. Three of these audiovisual components were honored with a Muse award. Muse awards are bestowed by AAM’s Media and Technology Committee "in recognition of the highest standards of excellence in the use of media and technology."

One of the award-winning presentations is a film in the "Afterthoughts" section of the Presidential gallery. The film contains personal reminiscences about Eisenhower from son John and other family members.

Also honored were two interactive "policy debates" in the "Domestic Issues" section of the gallery. In these touch-screen presentations, museum visitors explore different sides of issues, then make decisions about what path they would follow.

The audiovisual and interactive materials for the new gallery were produced by Boston Productions of Norwood, MA, in coordination with the gallery designer, Design and Production, of Lorton, VA.

The Reader’s Digest Foundation provided partial funding for the gallery.

The Dwight D. Eisenhower Library is a national repository for the preservation of historical papers, audiovisual materials and the artifacts relating to Dwight D. Eisenhower and his times. The Library makes this record accessible through research, museum exhibits, public programs, and educational outreach. The Eisenhower Library is one of 10 presidential libraries administered by the National Archives and Records Administration.
