National Archives Washington, DC, Rotunda to Remain Open Friday, June 11, With Special Display to Honor President Reagan
Washington, DC. . .The Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom at the National Archives Building will remain open to the public on Friday, June 11. To honor the memory of President Reagan there will be a display of his first State of the Union Address in the West Rotunda Gallery. The National Archives is located on Constitution Avenue, between 7th and 9th Street, NW. Normal summer Exhibit Hall hours will be in effect (10 a.m.-9 p.m.).
From Thursday, June 10, through Monday, July 5, the National Archives will display selected pages of President Reagans First State of the Union Address, January 26, 1982. Delivered one year after taking office and 10 months after narrowly escaping death when a would-be assassins bullet lodged an inch from his heart, the speech lays out his domestic and foreign policies. The opening and closing pages of the speech, which will be featured in the display, demonstrate the gift that made him known as "The Great Communicator."
Reflected in this speech is his abiding faith in the American people and their ability to achieve what he calls the "oldest hopes of our Republicprosperity for our Nation, peace for the world, and the blessings of individual liberty for our children and, someday, for all of humanity."
President Reagans First State of the Union Address, January 26, 1982, is exhibited with the permission of the U.S. House of Representatives.
