January 2004 Public Programs and Special Exhibit at The National Archives

Washington, DC . . . During January, the National Archives presents lectures with topics relating to aviation, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and electronic records. On Monday, January 19, the Emancipation Proclamation will be on special display for one day only in the Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

The programs are free and open to the public and will take place at noon in Room 105 at the National Archives Building, Pennsylvania Avenue between 7th and 9th Streets, NW, unless otherwise noted. Monday, January 19
Special Display of The Emancipation Proclamation
For one day only, the original Emancipation Proclamation will be on view in the Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday and in conjunction with The People's Vote exhibition. Signed by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation has assumed a place among the great documents of human freedom. Its display time is limited to one day in the interest of its long-term preservation.

Thursday, January 22
Lecture and Booksigning: Aviation
Bill Gilbert will discuss his latest book, Air Power: Heroes and Heroism in American Flight Missions, 1916 to Today. Gilbert recounts 11 missions from the pursuit of Pancho Villa in Mexico in 1916 to the Persian Gulf War in 1991. He tells the stories of historic flights over Tokyo, Ploesti, the Himalayan Mountains, and Hiroshima in World War II; the 15-month Berlin Airlift in 1948; and missions in Korea and Vietnam. Gilbert examines the types of planes, historic background on the missions, and identifies the crewmen involved. Noon. Call 202-501-5000 for room location and reservations.

Lecture and Booksigning: Aviation
Col. Walter Boyne USAF (Ret.) will discuss his book, Operation Iraqi Freedom: What Went Right; What Went Wrong and Why. This detailed account of the conflict presents the first balanced look at all U.S. military services as well as how seamlessly satellites and other space assets were coordinated with daily military operations. Wednesday, January 21
Panel Discussion and Booksigning: Electronic Records Bruce Ambacher and a panel of experts will discuss Thirty Years of Electronic Records. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) encompasses 30 years of experience in appraising, accessioning, preserving, describing, and providing access to archival electronic records. In this collection of essays, 12 contributors discuss the application of archival theory and practice in NARA's development of these functions and trace how they evolved over time. Noon.
