Aside from the Charters of Freedom, the National Archives holds in trust for the American people all of the official diplomatic correspondence and the ratified treaties with foreign countries, ranging from 1778 through 1992. Covering more than 200 years, these records chronicle the relationship and friendship that the United States has had with foreign nations. The treaties and other international agreements affirm friendship, commerce, navigation rights, boundaries, and peace. Among the records are also ceremonial letters, proclamations of royal births and deaths and official gifts to Presidents.
