National Archives Presents Special May 24th Screening of The March of the Bonus Army

Washington, DC…On Wednesday, May 24, at noon, the National Archives and the Charles Guggenheim Center for the Documentary Film present a special screening of The March of the Bonus Army (2006; 30 minutes). The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the film's Producer Glenn Marcus, and Director Robert Uth. The film's co-writers, Paul Dickson and Thomas B. Allen, will be in the Archives Shop after the program to sign copies of their book, The Bonus Army: An American Epic.

The thought-provoking documentary tells the dramatic story of a march on Washington, DC, in 1932 by tens of thousands of destitute World War I veterans, many with families, ultimately routed from the capital by army troops under the command of Douglas MacArthur. The veterans had come to demand a "Bonus" promised to them for their military service. Impoverished by the Great Depression, they hoped their country would help them in their time of need. The film uses rare archival photographs and newsreel footage, newly declassified documents, period music, and interviews with scholars, writers, and eye-witnesses of the Bonus March, to bring this explosive and transforming episode in American history to life. Narrated by Gary Sinise.

This program will take place in the William G. McGowan Theater of the National Archives Building in Washington, DC, located on the National Mall at Constitution Ave. and 7th Street, NW. Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis; the theater doors will open 30 minutes before the start of the program. The National Archives is fully accessible. If you need to request an accommodation (e.g., sign language interpreter) for a public program please e-mail public.program@nara.gov or call 202-357-5000 at least two weeks prior to the event to ensure proper arrangements are secured.
