Washington, DC Celebrates American Originals
Washington, DC. . . On Tuesday, October 25, 2005, the National Archives hosted the press conference announcing Washington, DC Celebrates American Originals - a summertime citywide tourism promotion for 2006, in partnership with The American Experience Foundation, the Washington, DC Convention & Tourism Corporation (WCTC) and Cultural Tourism DC (CTdc).
From Memorial Day through Labor Day 2006, the National Archives and other cultural institutions will join in a collaborative effort to introduce summer visitors to their all-American treasures, from the jazz clubs of U Street to the Charters of Freedom at the National Archives. This summer 2006 promotion will connect the opening of "American Originals - EYEWITNESS," a major exhibition at the National Archives, with the reopening of the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and other city-wide events.
National Archives "American Originals - EYEWITNESS" exhibition
The National Archives "American Originals - EYEWITNESS" exhibition will open on Friday, June 23, 2006 in the Lawrence F. O'Brien Gallery of the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C. Eyewitness accounts, in the form of letters, diaries, photographs, audio and film recordings, are presented in this unique exhibition, chronicling some of the most dramatic moments in U.S. history. Gripping and emotional, they capture the exuberance, grief, joy, panic, or chaos that characterized the events described. Many of the items, never before exhibited, offer a fresh and surprising perspective on familiar events. This exhibition is the latest in the "American Originals" series that opened in the Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom in 1995. Not surprisingly, "American Originals - EYEWITNESS" will be a centerpiece of the Washington, DC Celebrates American Originals promotion focused on attracting new visitors from throughout the country and beyond.
The National Archives "American Originals - EYEWITNESS" exhibition will be on display in the Lawrence F. O'Brien Gallery through January 1, 2007, and is free and open to the public. This exhibition is part of the National Archives Experience, which is made possible by a public-private partnership between the National Archives and the Foundation for the National Archives. The National Archives is located on the National Mall on Constitution Avenue at 9th Street, NW, and is fully accessible. Exhibit hours are 10 A.M. - 5:30 P.M. daily.
