THE WAY WE WORKED: Photographs From the National Archives

Press "Sneak Preview" and Chance to Meet the People Behind the Photos

WHAT: A special press "sneak preview" and breakfast to launch "The Way We Worked," a photo exhibition focusing on the history of work in America. Meet the real people behind the exhibition, including some of the individuals and photographers whose pictures are featured. The exhibition, which is free, opens to the public on Friday, December 16 in the Lawrence F. O'Brien Gallery of the National Archives Building in Washington, DC.

WHO:

  • Archivist of the United States Allen Weinstein
  • Curator of the exhibition Bruce Bustard
  • Special guest Jean Schnelle, who is featured in a 1975 photo in the exhibition. In the photo, she is a farm wife weeding while holding her six month-old son Dwight on her hip.
  • Special guest Dwight Schnelle, now 30 and the fifth-generation family owner of the Schnelle farm.
  • Special guest Michelle Bogre, whose photo of Jean and Dwight Schnelle is part of the exhibition. Now Chair of the photography department at Parsons School of Design in New York City.
  • Special guest Bill Gillette, photographer with the EPA's Documerica program in the 1970s, whose picture of migrant workers weeding a field of sugar beets is in the exhibition.

WHERE: The Lawrence F. O'Brien Gallery of the National Archives Building, Constitution Avenue at 7th St., NW, Washington DC. Entrance opens at 8:45 AM.

WHEN: Tuesday, December 13, 2005, 9 AM.

The exhibit will be on display through May 29, 2006, and is free and open to the public. The National Archives is located on the National Mall on Constitution Avenue at 9th Street, NW. Winter hours are 10 AM - 5:30 PM daily.
