Special Programs to Highlight National Archives Records in June

Washington, DC…In June, the National Archives will feature a series of programs highlighting records from the National Archives holdings including a lecture on Nixon tapes, a book group discussion on Watergate, a talk about Robert E. Lee’s letters, and a session on records relating to the Battle of Midway.

All programs are free and open to the public and will be held in the National Archives Building Research Center and at Archives II at College Park, Maryland. Both facilities are fully accessible. To request an accommodation (e.g., sign language interpreter) for a public program, please email public.program@nara.gov or call (202) 357-5000 at least two weeks prior to the event to ensure proper arrangements are secured.

Please note: For programs at the National Archives Research Center, the public must use the building’s Pennsylvania Avenue entrance, between 7th and 9th Streets, NW, Washington, DC.

Tuesday, June 12, at 11 a.m., Room G-24, Research Center
Records Relating to the Battle of Midway
To commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Midway, Archives Specialist Nathaniel Patch will discuss National Archives records relating to this World War II battle. (This lecture will be repeated at the National Archives at College Park, MD, in Lecture Room B, on Thursday, June 14, at 11 a.m.).

Reading the Man: A Portrait of Robert E. Lee Through His Letters
To commemorate the 200th birthday of Robert E. Lee, Elizabeth Brown Pryor discusses her new book, Reading the Man: A Portrait of Robert E. Lee Through His Letters. Using recently uncovered documents and letters, Pryor sheds new light on aspects of Lee’s life that are more complex and contradictory—and far more fascinating—than the familiar icon. Pryor contends that “Lee’s letters and papers reveal a man who is frequently as confused, passive, and vulnerable as he is conscientious and brave.”

From the Records Book Group
The Book Group will discuss Watergate: The Presidential Scandal That Shook America, by Keith W. Olson. This free discussion is open to the public. Please check the Archives Shop (202-357-5271) for book availability and a special discount for book group participants. Please note: there will be no Book Group in July and August. The group will meet again on September 26 to discuss The Archaeologist Was a Spy: Sylvanus G. Morley and the Office of Naval Intelligence, by Charles H. Harris III and Louis R. Sadler.

The Nixon Tapes
The Nixon Presidential Materials Staff is the custodian of the historical materials created and received by the White House during the administration of President Richard M. Nixon (1969–74). Supervisory Archivist John Powers will discuss the more than 950 reels of audiotapes in this collection. (This lecture will be repeated at the National Archives at College Park, MD, in Lecture Room B, on Thursday, June 28, at 11 a.m.).
