Yorba Linda, CA…The National Archives and Records Administration and the Los Angeles Public Library will co-host a lecture and book signing by Elizabeth Drew, Washington journalist and writer, on Thursday, June 21, at noon at Central Library in downtown Los Angeles.
This program was previously scheduled to take place at the Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace in Yorba Linda at 7 p.m. It has been rescheduled due to a conflict on the author’s schedule.
Drew will discuss her new book, Richard M. Nixon, which offers an intimate and surprising portrait of a complex man. She argues that President Nixon’s inner life offers the key to understanding his Presidency, and contends that the Watergate affair that ended his Presidency was both an overreach of executive power and a Shakespearean tragedy.
Timothy Naftali, director of the Nixon Presidential Materials Staff at the National Archives and director-designate of the Federal Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum, will provide introductory remarks. “I welcome Ms. Drew’s visit as a symbol of the ‘big tent’ public programming approach of the future Federal Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum,” Naftali said. (The private Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace will enter the National Archives system of Presidential libraries later this year, at which point it will become the Federal Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum.)
This program, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Central Library's Taper Auditorium. Central Library is located at 630 W. 5th Street, Los Angeles, California. Its telephone number is (213) 228-7000.
Elizabeth Drew is the former Washington correspondent for The New Yorker and the award-winning author of 13 previous books. As a highly-acclaimed observer of the Washington scene, Drew writes a nationally-syndicated column and serves as a commentator for NBC's Meet the Press. She is also frequently seen on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Drew has had her own series of weekly television programs for PBS and has served as a moderator and panelist for two Presidential debates. Drew covered both the Clinton and the Nixon impeachment proceedings.
Tim Naftali is the director of the Federal Nixon Presidential Materials Staff and the incoming director of the Federal, nonpartisan Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. A professor and expert on Presidential history, Naftali has written regularly for Slate.com and is the author of several books. He was most recently the co-author with Aleksander Fursenko of the award-winning Khrushchev’s Cold War: The Inside Story of an American Adversary.
