Free Screenings of Presidential Film Favorites

Washington, DC…As part of its Presidential Film Favorites series, the National Archives presents special screenings of Yankee Doodle Dandy on July 13 and 14, and High Noon on August 17 and 18. These screenings are inspired by the new multi-media exhibition "School House to White House: The Education of the Presidents." The exhibition runs through January 1, 2008 in the Lawrence F. O’Brien Gallery of the National Archives Building in Washington, DC Exhibit Hall hours (through Labor Day) are 10 p.m. – 7 p.m. daily. The Presidential Film Favorites series is generously supported by Chevy Chase Bank.

"School House to White House: The Education of the Presidents" is a family-friendly exhibition focusing on the early education of American Presidents from Herbert Hoover through George W. Bush and features documents and artifacts from the National Archives’ Presidential Libraries.

The screenings are free and open to the public and will be held in the William G. McGowan Theater and the Jefferson Conference located in the National Archives Building on Constitution Avenue between 7th and 9th Streets, NW, Washington, DC. Use the National Archives Building Special Events entrance on the corner of 7th Street and Constitution Avenue.

William G. McGowan Theater

A favorite of President Richard Nixon, Yankee Doodle Dandy stars James Cagney in an Academy Award–winning role as the great songwriter and performer George M. Cohan. Songs featured include "Over There" and "Give My Regards to Broadway." Not rated. (1942, 126 minutes)

High Noon —Friday, August 17, at 11 a.m.

Repeat Screening: Saturday, August 18, at noon
William G. McGowan Theater

Winner of four Academy Awards and a favorite film of Presidents Bill Clinton and Richard Nixon, High Noon tells the story of a retiring lawman, about to leave town with his new bride, who seeks allies among the fearful townspeople when an outlaw he put in prison returns with his gang to take revenge. Gary Cooper stars in this classic Western. Not rated. (1952, 85 minutes)
