Free Film Screenings of The Senator Was Indiscreet and The Candidate at the National Archives

Washington, DC…As the final installment of its "Running for Office" film series, the National Archives presents special noontime screenings of The Senator Was Indiscreet (1947) on Saturday, July 19, and The Candidate (1972) on Saturday, August 9. The Running for Office film series is generously supported by Chevy Chase Bank.
Saturday, July 19, 2008 – The Senator Was Indiscreet
William Powell stars as a dim-witted U.S. senator who decides to run for President,
with Ella Raines as a reporter interested in the detailed diary he has kept about
all the political misdeeds of his colleagues. Directed by George S. Kaufman. (88 minutes)
Saturday, August 9, 2008 – The Candidate
Robert Redford stars as Bill McKay, an idealistic young lawyer involved in
civil rights and ecology. His performance shockingly illustrates the costs—emotional,
moral, and financial—of running for public office in America. Rated PG. (109 minutes)
The "Running for Office" film series screenings are inspired by the National Archives exhibition “Running for Office: Candidates, Campaigns, and the Cartoons of Clifford Berryman” in the Lawrence F. O’Brien Gallery of the National Archives Building in Washington, DC, through August 17, 2008. Summer hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., daily.
The “Running for Office” exhibition includes 44 exceptional pen-and-ink drawings that highlight timeless aspects of the American campaign and election process. Clifford K. Berryman, staff political cartoonist for The Washington Post and the Washington Evening Star during the first half of the 20th century, drew thousands of cartoons commenting on Presidential and congressional candidates, campaign issues, and elections of his era. The cartoons are part of the official Records of the U.S. Senate housed in the National Archives Center for Legislative Archives.
The screenings are free and open to the public and will be held in the William G. McGowan Theater located in the National Archives Building on Constitution Avenue between 7th and 9th Streets, NW, Washington, DC. Use the National Archives Building Special Events entrance on the corner of 7th Street and Constitution Avenue.
