College Park, MD…The National Archives and Records Administration’s College Park, MD facility has received the 2008 Green Award from the City of College Park. The award was presented by Mayor Stephen A. Brayman during the College Park City Council meeting on Tuesday, May 27. The city’s Committee for a Better Environment (CBE) recognized the facility for its successful efforts to reduce energy and water consumption and its comprehensive recycling program.
The National Archives’ investments in infrastructure improvements (such as low-wattage light bulbs and motion-sensing lights), operational changes which have reduced equipment run time, and successful campaign to promote conservation by employees, have reduced water usage by 16% and energy usage by 5% this year compared to last year. This represents a carbon emissions reduction of 2600 tons.
CBE Committee Co-Chair Janis Oppelt stated, "The Committee recognized the National Archives for its impressive accomplishments in the Green Award category of 'reduce, reuse, recycle.' It was very rewarding for us to see that a Federal agency was taking such proactive steps."
