Washington, DC…On Wednesday, January 9,
at 7 p.m., the National Archives presents Harvard University President Drew Gilpin Faust discussing her newest book, This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War. A book signing will follow the program.

The program is free and open to the public, and will be held in the William G. McGowan Theater of the National Archives Building, located at Constitution and 7th St., NW. Metro accessible on the Yellow and Green lines, Archives/Navy Memorial station.

This Republic of Suffering is an illuminating study of the American struggle to comprehend the meaning and practicalities of death in the face of the unprecedented carnage of the Civil War. It explores the impact of this enormous toll from every angle—material, political, intellectual and spiritual—and shows how the war victimized civilians through violence that extended beyond battlefields.

Drew Gilpin Faust is president of Harvard University. A historian of the Civil War and the American South, she holds the Lincoln Professorship in History. Dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study from 2001 to 2007, she came to Harvard after twenty-five years on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of five previous books, including Mothers of Invention: Women of the Slaveholding South in the American Civil War, which won the Francis Parkman Prize and the Avery Craven Prize.
